Large sport utility vehicles offer plenty of room, three rows of seating and excellent towing capabilities. Two models, the Chevrolet Tahoe and Ford Expedition, are among the best known SUVs in this class, worthy of comparison if you are looking to buy a big SUV.

  1. Features

    • The largest sport utility vehicles are each known for offering similar features, including standard two-wheel drive and optional four- or all-wheel drive, seating for seven or more passengers, gas-powered V-8 engines and below average fuel economy. Only the Chevy Tahoe and its twin, the GMC Yukon, offer a hybrid version.

    Ford Expedition

    • The eight-passenger 2010 Ford Expedition rides on a platform similar to the one underpinning the Ford F-150 pickup truck. One engine choice is offered, a 5.4-liter V8 producing 310 horsepower. That engine is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. Regular and extended length Ford Expeditions are available; properly equipped, the Expedition can pull more than 9,000 pounds.

    Chevrolet Tahoe

    • The 2010 Chevrolet Tahoe is powered by a 5.3-liter V8 engine producing 320 horsepower. Optionally, the Chevy Tahoe is available with a 6.0-liter V8 paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. Maximum towing capacity is 8,500 pounds. Maximum seating capacity for nine passengers is also available.

    Bottom Line

    • Both the Ford and Chevrolet offer positive and negative features. The Ford has more room for third-row passengers while the Chevy offers better performance and a hybrid option.
