The Student Code of Conduct for Ethics in an Academic Environment

Most secondary and post-secondary schools expect strict adherence to an academic code of ethics. There are a few categories that such codes typically address, including respect for fellow students and teachers, and academic integrity.

  1. Plagiarism

    • Most collegiate codes of conduct specifically address the expectation of disclosing the sources of ideas or words originally expressed by someone else. If caught stealing the work of others and claiming original authorship, the consequences can be severe, including expulsion.

    Cheating

    • In their code of ethics, the San Mateo County Community College District defines cheating as "acting dishonestly in order to gain an unfair advantage." Most institutions explicitly prohibit any form of cheating.

    Exchange of Ideas

    • Education thrives on the expression of diverse ideas. Some schools, such as SMCCD, directly address this subject by promoting an inclusive dialogue among students and faculty. Furthermore, students are discouraged from mocking fellow students for their views or interrupting one another during dialogues.

    Other Considerations

    • Many schools also include an expectation of attendance or timeliness of submitted work in their code of ethics. It is also typical to specifically require students to obey all other institution or public laws in the course of their enrollment.
