How Many Hours of Cosmetology School Do You Need for a License?

A career as a cosmetologist can be rewarding as well as challenging. It requires training and licensing by a state agency. Prospective cosmetologists must commit at least a year, and more likely two years to their training.

State Requirements

There are no federal guidelines or licensing rules when it comes to cosmetology school training. Each state is allowed to set its own standards. This means that the hours of training required to get a license will vary by state. Every state requires that a prospective cosmetologist attended a state approved and licensed school.

Types of Programs

The majority of programs take between one to two years to complete. Programs are available at both stand alone cosmetology schools and community colleges. These programs are often certificate programs but some offer associate degrees in cosmetology.

Program Curricilum

These programs prepare students for the state licensing exams, while also providing both the styling and business skills necessary to work in the cosmetology field. Students can choose to specialize in one particular area, or cover the entire spectrum of skills.

Classroom and Hands On Experience

Programs consist of both a classroom phase, and practical hands on experience. Student cosmetologists work with experienced professionals in a apprentice role both at the school and at local salons.

State Example

School hours vary by state, but as an example Colorado requires cosmetologists to complete 60 credit hours of training, while a barber needs 50 credit hours. A manicurist or cosmetician only requires 20 credit hours of work. Becoming a hairstylist requires a total of 40 credit hours. In addition to these training hours, a state exam must be passed to get licensed. Again, requirements vary by state.
