Skip Tracer Training

Even if your dream is anonymity on a tropical beach, a skip tracer can still find you.

You can qualify for your own private investigator's license to do skip tracing (finding a person who owes money to your client). Although most states require only a short prep course and a one- or two-year internship under the tutelage of a licensed private investigator (PI), there are other ways to get skip tracer training.

  1. Types

    • Skip tracing is taught at a number of vocational schools across the country as part of their private investigator training programs. Other types of training include on-the-job training from an established PI (this accounts for a significant number of people who skip trace) and training acquired in a previous law-enforcement or military career.

    Time Frame

    • Skip-tracer training courses typically last between three months and one year. Most states require PI internships that last one or two years before a PI intern can be licensed to open her own skip-tracing business.

    • According to author Steven Kerry Brown, skip tracing is as much an art as it is a science. Knowing how to talk to people, especially over the phone, and convince them to help you out is a key skill to master if you are to be a successful skip tracer.
