According to Drugs.com, liothyronine is a synthetic form of the hormone T3, which is naturally produced by the thyroid gland. This medication is given when the body does not produce enough of the hormone T3 on its own, a condition known as hypothyroidism. Drugs.com says that this medication is used to regulate energy and metabolism in those who have hypothyroidism only; it should not be used as a means to treat obesity or weight problems.
