Acne is a frustrating and annoying problem for people of many ages. Although acne can occur in a variety of spots on the face and body, the painful bumps commonly develop on the chin. Understanding the causes of acne on the chin should help you treat and prevent the problem.

Hormones

As explained by the Acne.org website, “acne by its very nature is considered a hormonal disease.” During various periods in life, the body’s hormone levels become imbalanced and uncontrolled. When this occurs, a surplus of body oils can clog the hair follicles and cause acne on the chin. Hormones are generally the main cause of acne during puberty, pregnancy and menopause.

Sweat & Oils

According to the Mayo Clinic, “acne occurs when the hair follicles become plugged with oil and dead skin cells.” Oils can be transferred to the chin by the hands, hair, sporting equipment, pillowcases and telephones. Prevent this transfer of oils by keeping your hands and hair off the chin and face and frequently cleaning objects that come in contact with your chin.

Stress

Occasionally, stress might also be the cause of acne on the chin. When a person experiences stress, the body automatically initiates an inflammatory response. In the fragile pores of the face, this inflammatory response may cause the walls of the pores to break or collapse, trapping the oils inside. When these oils cannot escape, the area becomes red and swollen and an acne bump develops.
