What Is DDR DIMM?

What Is DDR DIMM? thumbnail
DDR DIMM describes a type of memory module.

DDR DIMM memory is a relatively old form of memory module, used to provide computers with random access memory. Users can upgrade memory modules in computers to make the amount of available RAM larger.

  1. DDR

    • DDR is an acronym for double data rate. When first introduced, DDR effectively doubled memory throughput or speed by emitting outputs twice for each computer clock cycle. DDR2 and DDR3 improved upon DDR technology.

    DIMM

    • DIMM stands for dual inline memory module. "Dual" here refers to both sides of the module having a separate electrical contact, each of the golden pins providing two contacts, whereas the earlier single inline memory modules only had one contact per tooth.

    Upgrading DDR DIMM Memory Modules

    • Many branded computers are compatible only with specific memory modules, and making sure to choose the right component is the most difficult task in upgrading a computer's memory modules. The modules themselves are easily identified and installed.
