What Is the Meaning of Therapeutic Shampoos?
Therapeutic shampoos are designed to treat specific conditions of the hair and scalp. They are available both over the counter and by prescription from your doctor. Common conditions include dandruff, psoriasis and oily hair. Does this Spark an idea?

Over the Counter
-
Your local drugstore will carry many therapeutic shampoos that will treat the most common hair and scalp complaints. These include dandruff, psoriasis, oily hair, dry hair or thin hair. Most major shampoo brands have a line of therapeutic shampoos designed to strengthen hair, add moisture to dry hair or relieve dry or itchy scalp. Shampoos to remove product buildup are also common.
Salon Products
-
High-end salons may have their own line of therapeutic shampoos. These have higher quality ingredients and are more expensive than drugstore brands. These therapeutic shampoos are designed to treat common complaints such as oily or dry hair and dandruff and also may be formulated to clarify the hair and scalp, encourage thin hair to grow faster or appear thicker, strengthen hair to avoid breakage or otherwise promote hair health.

Prescription Products
-
If your condition is severe, your dermatologist or doctor may prescribe a prescription therapeutic shampoo. This is most common in the case of conditions such as severe dandruff, seborrhea or psoriasis. Some products, such as Propecia and Rogaine, have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat hair loss. These products are not shampoos, however.
