How Long Do Owl Monkeys Live in Captivity?

The owl monkey is a type of New World primate including all 10 species of the genus Aotus, which are grouped into gray-necked and red-necked categories. The only nocturnal monkey, owl monkeys are most easily recognized by their large, round eyes.

  1. Lifespan in Captivity

    • Owl monkeys are capable of living up to 20 years in captivity. This record, recorded in 1996, is the upper limit of the age range; many monkeys die earlier.

    Lifespan in the Wild

    • Little study has been conducted regarding the lifespan of the owl monkey in its natural habitat. The only recorded data is that regarding a single male specimen of the Aotus azarae species, which is known to have lived for 11 years in the wild.

    Infant Mortality

    • The survival rate of infant owl monkeys in captivity is remarkably high. Approximately 96 percent of owl monkeys live to the age of 6 months, with 85.8 percent surviving to their first year.
