What Is GDDR3 RAM?

What Is GDDR3 RAM? thumbnail
The graphics card is an important component of a computer's hardware.

When upgrading a computer, you must purchase parts that are compatible with your motherboard. Incompatible parts will either not fit into your motherboard or not run once installed. GDDR is not the same as DDR RAM, which fits into the motherboard.

  1. GDDR Memory

    • GDDR SDRAM stands for graphics double data rate synchronous dynamic random access memory. GDDR memory is used for graphics cards---also called video cards. A video cards is a mechanism in your computer that translates data into visual images.

    Development

    • Until recently, the RAM used in motherboards and the RAM used in conjunction with video cards was the same. As graphics cards became more sophisticated, manufacturers needed memory cards that could run at faster clock speeds and require less power.

    Bandwidth

    • GDDR3 runs at a much higher bandwidth than DDR3, which has a 64-bit bus and usually two or three channels. The total bus-width therefore is 128 bits or 192 bits. Since most graphics cards run four to eight channels, GDDR3 has a maximum bus-width of 256 bits to 512 bits. In other words, GDDR3 runs up to four times faster than DDR3.
