Retin-A cream is used to treat acne, wrinkles and warts.

Retin-A cream is the brand name for Tretinoin-Topical. It is a cream derived from vitamin A that works by affecting the growth of skin cells, removing dead skin cells and encouraging new skin. The approved professional labeling for this medication indicates that it is for the treatment of acne; however, physicians often prescribe it for other skin conditions.

  1. Acne

    • Retin-A cream is prescribed for acne patients to decrease the number and severity of pimples by preventing dead skin cells from clogging pores. It also unclogs pores, allowing other medications to reach the infection in the hair shaft, and promotes rapid healing of pimples.

    Wrinkles

    • Retinoid medications, including Retin-A and Renova can be prescribed to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It slows premature aging and reduces the effects of sun damage.

    Warts

    • Retin-A disrupts the growth of cells in warts. According to the study, "Guidelines for the management of cutaneous warts," published in the British Journal of Dermatology in 2001, 85 percent of children treated with Retin-A were clear of warts after treatment.
