According to the National Postdoctoral Association, a post-doctorate scholar holds a doctoral degree (such as a Ph.D., Pharm.D, M.D., D.N.S., etc.). These individuals are typically spending a temporary period of time performing mentored research in order to help them gain the professional skills they will eventually need in their field.

  1. Base Salary

    • According to an August 2010 survey from PayScale.com, the average postdoc brings in between $36,330 and $48,334 per year. This equates to them earning an hourly wage that ranges from $14.74 to $24.86 per hour.

    Benefits

    • The typical bonus for a person holding this job is $2,000 per year. Additionally, most people holding this job receive a benefit package that includes paid vacation and sick days, life insurance and 401(k) options.

    Experience

    • For every five years working in the field, a postdoctoral research associate's salary is expected to increase gradually between $2,000 and $6,250. In fact, after working in the field 20 years, the average postdoc is expected to make approximately $20,000 more than when he just started at an entry-level position.
