If you have ever watched a political newscast or read an article about an upcoming election, you would likely have run into the terms "GOP" and "caucus." If these words have puzzled you, their simple meaning might be surprising.

The Republicans, known for working to free the slaves, began referring to themselves as the Grand Old Party or the GOP and the title has stuck.
