How to Troubleshoot a Frozen Zune

Reconnect with your frozen Zune.

Microsoft introduced the Zune as a portable music player in 2006. Current versions of the Zune play music, display HD video and connect to the Internet. Like many portable electronic devices, Zune players of all generations occasionally freeze. If your Zune is stuck upon a particular screen, you can often solve the problem yourself.

Check the Hold Switch

The hold switch may be locked. Move the hold switch back and forth a few times, leaving it in the unlocked position.

Try a Hard Reset

Manually reset your Zune. If you have a first, second or third generation Zune, hold down the back button and press up on the directional pad. If you have a Zune HD, hold down the power button.

Connect to a Power Source

Try connecting your Zune to a power source. If possible, connect it to your computer using the USB Zune sync cable. AC or car adapters also may revive your Zune.

Update Firmware

If you have successfully restarted your Zune, update its firmware in order to reduce the chances that it will freeze again. Connect your Zune to your computer using the USB cable. Open the Zune software. Click "Settings," then click "device," then click "Device Update."
