How to Compare Mini Computers

Mini computers such as this one are often used for home-theater systems.

Mini computers, better known as small-form-factor computers, are computers that are smaller than mini-tower PC cases. Mini computers are useful as basic household computers and are often used as part of a digital home-theater system.

  1. Processor

    • As of 2010, many mini computers use Intel Atom processors, which are powerful enough for basic Internet usage as well as to run as a media or home-theater PC. If you wish to use the mini computer for more processor-intensive function such as gaming, choose one with an Intel Core 2 Duo card or better.

    Optical drive

    • To save space, some mini computers may not have an internal optical drive. If you require an optical drive, particularly if you plan on using the mini computer as part of a home-theater system, choose a mini computer that includes an optical drive.

    Expansion slots

    • Before purchasing a mini computer, check which if any expansion slots it has if you plan on adding components. Small-form-factor computers have very little room for expansion slots. Some mini computers may have no free slots, while others may have only a few.
