What is the Law for Being Involuntarily Committed to a Drug Rehabilitation Center in Massachusetts?
The Acts and Resolves of 2004 enacted emergency commitments for three days, effective March 2, 2005. Formerly, the length of commitment lasted four days. The law also changed the length of time to hold a judicial hearing from four days to five. However, the law does not distinguish between any types of involuntary commitments.

Examinations
-
Emergency rooms may not discriminate against anyone, regardless of condition. Patients may speak with medical personnel in confidence and the hospital or doctor may not release patient information without patient consent.
Considerations
-
The least restrictive environment must be provided to the patient; if the patient does not need restraints, they should not be used. Interpreters must be offered, if needed.
-
Patient Rights
-
All patients have the right to refuse treatment. The doctor must report all related information to the patient as completely and fully as possible. This includes risks, side effects and benefits of treatment.
