What Is a Dump Valve?

Dump valves are devices fitted in the engines of turbo-charged cars and are typically positioned between the throttle body and compressor, or turbo, outlet.
Function

Dump valves stabilize compressor flow and prevent a turbo-charged engine from entering a state known as "surge." Surge can occur with a reduction in the compressor flow, which occurs when the throttle closes and pressure decreases. A reduction in compressor flow can cause the compressor to become unstable and possibly fail.

Process

Dump valves open when the throttle closes and either allows excess compressor flow to escape into the atmosphere or return to the compressor inlet safely. By maintaining a proper flow, the dump valve also draws energy from the rotating assembly and slows the turbo down more quickly.
