Remington Knife Information

World War I created favorable conditions for arms maker Remington to step into the business of knife production. During the war, importation of high-quality English and German knives slowed or halted, creating a ready market for Remington.

  1. History

    • Remington began producing knives in 1920. These early knives were so commercially successful that at one point, the company produced as many as 10,000 knives a day. This success was due in part to anti-German sentiment causing Americans to shun knives from Solingen, Germany, in favor of U.S.-made knives. Remington ceased production of knives in 1940 to concentrate on the war effort, producing arms for World War II.

    Varieties

    • From 1920 to the end of production in 1940, Remington produced more than 700 varieties of knives, using at least 11 different handle materials and eight varieties of identification shield. The final shield design was the "bullet" shield, which looks like a rifle cartridge. These bullet patterns are the most widely collected of all Remington knives.

    Modern Remington Knives

    • In 1982, Remington began selling the Bullet Series knives again, eventually adding all-new designs of pocketknives, fixed blades and multi-tools. These newer knives are produced on contract for Remington by other companies.
