Unplugged network cables prevent connection to a network server.

Computer networks can be complex, but the reasons why you cannot connect to a server often are simple. Before calling the help desk or seeking technical support elsewhere, check the most common reasons for losing network connectivity.

  1. Network Cabling

    • Many networks are run entirely through wires, and if one of the wires becomes unplugged or damaged, you lose connection to that network or server. Network cables can be protected by running them along walls, through ceilings or under carpeting and subfloors.

    Network Availability

    • Networks and servers are prone to downtime like any other computer system. If a user cannot connect to a server, the server itself may be offline for maintenance or because of a crash.

    Network Configuration

    • Most computers can automatically configure network settings. However, if the configuration information is lost or changed intentionally or accidentally, the computer may not be able to connect to the network or server.
