Equine Ultrasound Technologist Training

Training to become an equine ultrasound technologist is similar to that needed to become a human ultrasound technologist. Most of the necessary course work is provided in conjunction with veterinary schools or furnished by the equipment providers.

  1. Ultrasound Uses

    • Ultrasound is a common tool used to check for pregnancy in mares as well as in the diagnosis of soft tissue injuries. It also is used to determine arthritic changes in joints and to find the best routes for injections into these joints.

    Course Work

    • Most ultrasound instruction is aimed at those who are practicing veterinarians or licensed veterinary technicians. Course work, such as that provided through Sound-Eklin, a provider of ultrasound equipment, will include the basis of equipment operation, as well as the recognition of normal and abnormal tissue structures.

    Costs and Length of Study

    • Courses can usually be completed in one to four weeks at a cost of $1,250 to $1,350 per week as of 2010. Those completing the courses receive a certificate from their respective schools.
