How to Compare Stevia Extract to Powder

How to Compare Stevia Extract to Powder thumbnail
Stevia extract usually comes in small brown bottles.

Stevia extract is a clear liquid form of the natural low-calorie sweetener, extracted from the stevia plant. Stevia powder is usually white, though unbleached and minimally processed stevia powder is green. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Identification

    • Stevia extract generally comes in a dark-colored bottle with an eyedropper. Stevia powder comes in a canister and may include a tiny, specialized measuring spoon.

    Cost

    • Stevia extract and stevia powder may have different prices per ounce, but this isn't the best way to measure price. Instead, look on the package to determine the serving size and how many servings are in each container. A serving is usually equivalent in sweetness to 1 tsp. sugar. Then divide the package price by the number of servings to get the per-serving price.

    Nutritional Value

    • Stevia usually has negligible nutritional value. However, some varieties of stevia powder are mixed with a fiber supplement to bulk it up and add nutritional value. This also reduces the sweetness of the powder, though serving sizes are commensurately larger to compensate.
