Subway "sandwich artists" are trained on the job and online. The main prerequisites for the position include some high school education and the ability to stand, bend, walk and frequently lift 10 pounds.

Duties

Sandwich artists greet and serve customers, explain menu items and prepare food orders. They also operate the cash register, account for inventory, perform light paperwork duties and adhere to food quality standards.

Training

Subway provides on-the-job training for its sandwich artists, as well as "Subway University" online training and certification in food safety and franchise procedures. Once a person is hired at Subway and before he can begin working, he must go to the Subway University online training website and complete the mandatory online courses with a passing grade.

Requirements

Applicants do not need previous food preparation or service experience to become a sandwich artist, but they must be able to implement written and verbal instructions. The position entails occasional lifting of up to 30 pounds and long periods of standing and bending.

Advancement

Applicants with quick-service restaurant experience -- including sandwich artist experience -- can become senior sandwich artists, who perform the same duties as sandwich artists, but have the added responsibility of training employees. Senior sandwich artists can then advance to shift manager, assistant manager, manager and multi-unit manager positions.
