Can Acne Appear All Over the Body?

While acne is often associated with the appearance of blackheads or whiteheads on the face, acne can occur in many places on the body, including the back, legs, shoulders, and chest. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Acne and Sebaceous Glands

    • According to the University of Chicago Medical Center, acne can occur almost anywhere on the body, but is most active in the areas that have a high concentration of sebaceous glands. Sebaceous glands, also known as oil glands, produce sebum.

    Sebaceous Gland Activity

    • The sebacious glands are most active during puberty. They are also more active in some areas than in others. The face, back, neck, and shoulders have a higher concentration of glands than other parts of the body.

    Body Acne Treatment

    • Regardless of where the acne is located on the body, the treatment options are the same. Acne-fighting ingredients can be found in body washes, bar soaps, facial cleansers, and treatment products. In some cases, prescription body acne medication may be necessary.

    Acne-free areas

    • The palms of the hands and the soles of the feet do not contain any sebaceous glands. As a result, acne will never appear in either location.
