How to Compare Apple Laptops
As of summer 2010, Apple has three lines of notebook computer to choose from: MacBook, MacBook Pro and MacBook Air. Processing power, drive selection and memory options are the main differentiators between the lines.
-
Processor
-
The Intel Core 2 Duo processors on the MacBook, Macbook Air and MacBook Pro 13.3” are suitable for most basic functions like browsing and document editing. The Intel Core Duo i5 and i7 available on the 15” and 17” MacBook Pro are better suited for intensive functions like gaming and video editing.
Drives
-
The MacBook Air features a 120 GB or 128 GB solid state drive. The MacBook has a 250 GB standard drive, while the MacBook Pro line offers standard hard drives in 250 GB, 320 GB and 500 GB sizes. Solid state drives have no moving parts and are smaller, making them ideal for portability. However, they lack the storage capacity that traditional drives provide.
-
Memory
-
The Macbook and Macbook Air both come with 2 GB of memory, sufficient for Internet browsing and most software applications. The MacBook Pro comes with 4 GB of memory, which is better for more memory-intensive programs such as video editing and gaming.
