The city of Santa Monica, located in Los Angeles County in southern California, shares an inland border with the city of Los Angeles and faces the Santa Monica Bay to the west. It boasts sunny skies and mild temperatures year-round, though the skies tend to be smoggy in the fall.

September Temperature

According to the Western Regional Climate Center, temperatures recorded at the Santa Monica Pier during September over the period 1937 through 2009 show an average high temperature of 72.1 degrees Fahrenheit and an average low temperature of 61.4 degrees Fahrenheit. The water temperature in the Santa Monica Bay averages 66.5 degrees Fahrenheit in September.

Climate

Santa Monica's location by the bay gives it a Mediterranean climate, with mild weather patterns and more than 300 sunny days per year. Cool breezes blowing in from the Pacific Ocean keep Santa Monica about five to 10 degrees cooler than inland areas, including downtown Los Angeles, which is about 10 miles away.

Air Quality

Changes in wind patterns and ocean temperatures affect Santa Monica's air quality as well as its temperatures. The ocean breezes generally keep the air clean and fresh. However, from September to November, the Santa Ana winds occasionally blow smoggy Los Angeles air in Santa Monica's direction. The skies also tend to be foggier in May and June.
