Naval Etiquette

Avoid getting involved in shipboard business.

Etiquette is very important when on a U.S. Navy ship, according to Naval History and Heritage (NHAH). Rules for social customs are different aboard a Navy ship than they are on civilian vessels.

  1. Wardroom

    • Never wear slacks or shorts in a Navy vessel's wardroom, as you are expected to dress nicely for the occasion. You are a guest of the officers on the ship in this room, according to Naval History and Heritage (NHAH). Children should not be brought to the wardroom unless specifically invited by an officer.

    Boarding

    • Punctuality and dressing formally are essential when boarding a naval vessel, according to NHAH. Wear attire that would be accepted at the Officer's Club. Never board a Navy vessel without being invited.

    Ceremonies

    • Naval ceremonies take place during the day. Gloves, hats and stockings should be worn, and these ceremonies are invitation-only. A Master of Ceremonies will let you know when to sit and stand.
