How to Extend a Car Dealership Factory Warranty
A vehicle's factory warranty provides coverage from the manufacturer but is purchased at the dealership. You can go to any same-make dealership to purchase the extended coverage, and all same-make dealers will honor the warranty for covered repairs.

Types
-
You can purchase a warranty that provides bumper-to-bumper coverage (the same as new car coverage), or you can extend the powertrain warranty, which covers all major components of the engine and transmission. Also, aftermarket warranties are available, which may offer the same coverage for less money. An aftermarket plan is accepted at independent shops, not just at the dealership.
Time Frame
-
You have limited time to purchase an extended manufacturer's warranty. If you bought a new vehicle, you must buy before your warranty coverage period is up. If purchasing a used car from a dealership, you are given the option to purchase the extended coverage before taking the vehicle home. Afterward, you have to find an outside warranty provider. Check with your insurance provider. Some offer extended coverage, although not from the manufacturer.

Features
-
Purchasing a manufacturer's extended bumper-to-bumper warranty covers your vehicle just as it did when your car was new. This includes any roadside assistance programs. Powertrain warranties, which cover the components of the drivetrain, cover the same manufacturer items. If purchasing aftermarket, you can decide on what kind of coverage you need: there several coverages from which to choose. For example, you do not have to have full bumper-to-bumper coverage. You can choose just your electric systems and powertrain, which wouldn't include broken interior pieces within the vehicle.
