How to Buy Steel Toe Shoes

Steel-toe shoes are required for workers at power plants, mines, construction sites and other workplaces where feet must be well-protected. The ideal pair of steel-toe shoes provides an optimal level of foot support, comfort and safety in the workplace.

Metatarsal Guards

Ask whether your employer requires metatarsal guards for your steel-toe shoes. Steel-toe shoes with metatarsal guards protect the entire top of the foot and are preferred when an employee may be exposed to falling objects. However, shoes with metatarsal guards are considerably heavier than shoes without them.

Waterproof v. Water Resistant

Ask whether your feet will ever be entirely submerged under water. Most steel-toe shoes are water-resistant and designed to handle rain and snow, but only some, like steel-toe rubber overshoes, are designed to handle submersion.

Specialty Stores

Visit a store that specializes in outdoor attire and steel-toe boots and shoes. The salespeople at these stores are knowledgeable enough to answer any questions you may have about specific brands of steel-toe shoes.

Trying On Steel Toe Shoes

Try on several styles and brands, keeping in mind that your steel-toe shoe size may not match your sneaker size. The shoes should allow your feet to breathe. They should be loose enough that you can comfortably wear thick woolen socks and warming pads inside, but not so loose that they cause blisters.

Slip-Resistant Shoes

Examine the soles of the shoes. If you work on wet surfaces, choose shoes with slip-resistant soles.

Ask the salesperson if the steel-toe shoes come with a warranty. Steel-toe shoes can cost as much as $200, but it may be worth the cost if they protect your foot from falling tools and harsh weather and provide years of wear.
