Hamsters are highly susceptible to temperature changes. Fluctuating their temperature by more than a few degrees is dangerous for the animal. A stable and moderate climate is necessary for optimal hamster health.

Hamsters should be kept at a temperature between 65 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit. However, according to Provet Healthcare Information, these rodents adjust well to most moderate household temperatures. Environmental controls such as heating pads are necessary if the pet owner lives in an extremely cold climate.
Avoid Drafts and Sunlight

The Petco website recommends keeping a hamster out of drafty areas and away from windows or direct sunlight so that the animal does not become too hot or too cold. In addition, the Hilltop Animal Hospital suggests purchasing glass or plastic cages with at least one side open for air circulation.

Hibernation

According to Hammy's World, hamsters will slow down and become lethargic if the temperature drops below 50 degrees Fahrenheit. If the temperature drops below that point the animal will prepare for hibernation. The website warns that the animal will die of starvation or dehydration if it is allowed to continue hibernating. Warm the hamster in your hands until it wakes up.
