How to Highlight Blond Hair With Kool-Aid Dye

If you want to experiment with coloring your hair but aren't looking for anything permanent, try using Kool-Aid mix as a hair dye for light hair. Kool-Aid offers a variety of colors to play around with and washes out after a few shampoos.

Why Dye

Highlighting your hair with Kool-Aid is an affordable way to add personality to your hair color. The amount of Kool-Aid needed to highlight your hair costs just over $1 as of 2010, and takes anywhere from one to 12 hours to dye.

Mix It up

To create the dye, mix three packets of Kool-Aid with just enough water to moisten the granules, and add about a tablespoon of conditioner to thicken and create a paste.

How To

Dozens of color options are available when you use Kool-Aid dye.

Before you begin highlighting your hair, apply petroleum jelly on your forehead, ears and the base of your neck to prevent dyeing your skin. Wearing gloves, apply the paste to the sections of your hair you wish to highlight, then wrap with aluminum foil. For best results, wrap your hair with plastic wrap, and leave the dye in your hair overnight. When your hair reaches the desired color, remove wrappings and wash hair with both shampoo and conditioner.

Tip

Use unsweetened Kool-Aid to prevent making a paste that is too sticky or that will attract bugs.
