Can Overactive Histamines Cause Acne-Like Skin Problems?

Can Overactive Histamines Cause Acne-Like Skin Problems? thumbnail
Water and sun exposure can cause excess histamine production in the body.

The body releases histamine when it comes into contact with an allergen or other stressful environmental substance or experience. Examples include exercise, stress and temperature extremes, according to the Mayo Clinic. This results in a variety of allergic reactions, including skin conditions.

  1. Skin Inflammation

    • Histamine causes red, itchy skin in some people, according to Davidson College. This condition, known as hives, causes varying sizes of red welts or bumps to appear intermittently on the skin.

    Acne

    • Histamine does not cause acne to form on the skin. Acne occurs when pores clog as a result of excess oil production combined with dead skin cells. This clogged pore then provides a hospitable environment for bacteria to grow, initiating the body's immune response. The end result is a bulging follicle and what is known to most people as acne.

    Treatment

    • Skin reactions caused by histamine may not require treatment in mild cases. Treat other cases with over-the-counter or prescription antihistamines. Corticosteroids may be prescribed in severe cases.
