Eau de toilette, or EDT, often comes in a spray bottle.

The acronym EDT refers to "eau de toilette," a fragrance preparation that contains a small amount of perfume in a large amount of carrier alcohol. The cost is therefore less than more concentrated perfumes. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Identification

    • The French words "Eau de toilette" mean "toilet water." Literally, this means water for dressing and washing, according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary online. In practice, this means a diluted fragrance preparation.

    Significance

    • According to Overstock.com, eau de toilette, also called EDT, contains about 4 to 10 percent fragrance compounds. The rest of it consists of alcohol. Eau de perfume has slightly more fragrance, eau de cologne contains slightly less, and products labeled as "perfume" contain the highest ratio of fragrance oil to carrier substance.

    Warning

    • According to Greenpeace, many perfumes and eau de toilettes contain synthetic musks and phthalates that have negative effects on the environment. Some of these chemicals mimic hormonal effects, leading to problems with the endocrine system. Seeking out natural perfumes and eau de toilettes can protect users from these problems.
