International managers must learn how to manage effectively as if in their home country.

Managers moving into international management positions should be properly prepared for the challenges they will face. While many larger corporations provide this formal training to its employees, there are programs available at business schools across the U.S.

  1. Global Mindset

    • International managers must have an open mind and be able to interpret how to apply knowledge and skills to the new working environment. These managers should be able to go above how they are conditioned to see the world so that they can rise above and have the flexibility to manage in a diverse workforce.

    Cultural Immersion

    • The international manager needs to be willing to be immersed into the culture of the new country in order to fully understand how to adapt knowledge and skills appropriately to the new working environment. The skills and techniques learned while in the home country may not be effective in a country which shares different values; therefore, the manager should look at the differences and make adjustments to his management style.

    Ethical Responsibility

    • When managers are placed into international countries, they are often more exposed to ethical dilemmas. International business managers should understand the ethical laws of both her home country and hosting country, then apply the laws of the stricter of the two when making a decision.
