Types
-
There are four main versions of QuickBooks software. Simple Start is the free version that allows basic accounting functions. The limitations are in the number of reports, customers and vendors it will allow. The Pro version can do just about anything for many types of businesses, though it cannot be used effectively for a manufacturing company or in cases where it is necessary to keep track of back orders. The Premiere version is a more advanced version that will work for service or retail companies. The Enterprise version is similar to the Premiere version, but with expanded capabilities and greater capacity for items, customers and vendors.
Features
-
QuickBooks features add-on services that small businesses may need. These features include payroll, merchant services, point-of-sale equipment, customer and document managers to aid in the organization of the business. Each of these are services a small business needs anyway, and they're often available at rates that are cheaper than using third-party services.

Operating QuickBooks
-
There is often more than one way to accomplish the same task in using QuickBooks. With four different types of menus and the ability to customize the desktop, the flexibility lets you choose your most comfortable method of navigating the software. Some people use QuickBooks as more of an electronic check register, recording financial transactions that affect the bank account. On the positive side, this method can save time. On the negative side, the reports QuickBooks generates require a lot more detail for each transaction than dollar amount and customer name.
