Types
-
The swivel office chair is one of the most common types of swivel chairs. Often, it has wheels on the bottom--making it mobile to move easily around a room--and can be seen in cubicles, home offices and conference rooms.
Another kind of swivel chair is the swivel reclining chair. This chair, which is commonly found in a home living room or den, is an armchair with a reclining back that also has a swiveling seat. Most swivel reclining chairs also have expendable footrests. Some swivel reclining chairs have seats that turn 180 degrees. Other seats rotate a full 360 degrees.
Function
-
The swivel chair makes it easier to face different parts of a room from the same seat. It is especially useful for turning from the computer to the guest chair in an office.

History
-
According to Gregory LeFever's October 2008 article in Early American Life, Thomas Jefferson invented the first swivel chair at about the same time that he signed the Declaration of Independence. The chair was a modified version of the Windsor writing chair but had a swivel seat. Jefferson liked the chair because it "had the miraculous quality of allowing a person seated in it to turn his head without moving his tail."
