What Are Hookahs Used For?

A hookah is a device used for smoking that filters the smoke through water. A hookah typically consists of a stationary base and a long hose from which the user inhales the smoke.

Design

Hookahs consist of a vase at the bottom that is filled with water, a tray or bowl which holds the tobacco, a screen over the tray or bowl where coals are placed, and a long hose attached to the vase. The hookah is designed to remain stationary during use, the hose being the only mobile part of it.

Use

People use hookahs to smoke shisha, tobacco prepared without tar or additives. The user places the shisha in the bowl of the hookah, then places coals on the screen above the bowl to light the shisha. The user breathes smoke through the hose, which first passes through the water in the vase and cools before reaching the user.

Hookah Bars

Hookah bars are businesses that have hookahs set up for people to come in and smoke. Customers can order from a variety of different flavors of shisha and smoke it there in the bar.
