How to Compare Bicycle Locks
Whether you use a bicycle for commuting, recreation, exercise or just for fun, it's important to protect your bike from theft with a reliable bike lock. There are many styles in a wide price range, so consider all the factors before you buy. Once you own a lock, learn how to lock your bike properly, and do it every time.

Lock Styles
-
U-locks are generally the most effective lock on the market. They can be slightly inconvenient to use because they are not pliable like cable or chain locks, thus making them harder to lock to immobile objects. But it is this special shape that makes them harder to break. A high quality chain lock can be very effective and versatile for locking, but a hassle to carry because it is heavy. Almost all cable locks are easily broken, but can be an added deterrent when used in conjunction with a U-lock or a cable lock.
Lock Materials
-
Your lock must be resistant to crowbars, bolt cutters and hacksaws, so locks made with high quality materials are much more effective than locks made with softer, lower quality materials. Case-hardened or hardened steel locks are the most effective.

Locking Mechanisms
-
Most locks are locked with either a flat key or a combination. Both are effective, so choosing your locking mechanism is a mater of preference. Consider whether you are more likely to lose a key or forget a combination.
Register Your Bike
-
Keep a record of your bike's serial number, and register your bike with your local police office in case it is stolen. Some companies offer theft-protection warranties with the purchase of a lock, so be sure to register your bike with the company as well.
