Junior lifeguard training is a program designed by local communities to educate children about the potential hazards involved with the ever changing aquatic environment. The emphasis of the program is on safety, instruction, discipline, respect and physical fitness. Junior lifeguards learn about the environment, CPR, first aid and basic lifesaving. Many coastal communities throughout the United States offer Junior Lifeguard programs.

  1. Basic Requirements

    • You must be able to swim underwater.

      To join a junior lifeguard program, students must be between the ages of 9 and 17. They must be able to swim 100 yards in under two minutes, swim underwater for at least 10 yards and tread water for five minutes.

    Program Content

    • Junior lifeguards learn safe surfing techniques
      Junior lifeguards learn safe surfing techniques

      Junior lifeguards learn about beach and ocean safety. They also get instruction in swimming skills and lifesaving technique. There is also instruction on body surfing, body boarding and surfing. They often compete with other junior lifeguard programs, so they play volleyball and other beach games. Junior lifeguards also go on field trips.

      Junior lifeguards learn the value of teamwork and self respect, and how to handle themselves in a safe and responsible manner in and around the water.

    International Exchange

    • Junior Lifeguard programs are located all over the United States and in other countries such as New Zealand, Australia, Germany and Wales. There are opportunities for students to travel to these countries on exchange programs or to participate in competitions.
