Hard Seat Vs. Regular Seat Cutting Saddles

Western saddles can be purchased with either a hard or soft (i.e., padded) seat from a variety of saddle manufacturers. In some cases, the same saddle will come with the option to select a hard seat or a regular seat.

  1. Hard Seat

    • Hard seat saddles can be categorized as saddles that do not have extra padding in the seat area. Dakota Saddlery explains that the seat section of "hard seat" saddles is made by using one large piece of leather for the seat. These saddles can be more expensive initially because a larger, higher quality, piece of leather is required to create the hard seat.

According to Dakota Saddlery, the one-piece construction distributes the rider's weight over a broader area, improving rider balance and decreasing potential saddle soreness.

    Soft Seat

    • Soft, or regular, seat saddles are more common than hard seat saddles. These saddle seats are made when two smaller pieces of leather are sewn together in order to form the base of the seat. The two pieces and the seam are then covered with a padded seat.

    Hard vs. Soft

    • Regardless of whether a saddle is a hard or soft seat, a well-made saddle will still be comfortable and a poorly made saddle with problematic seams and construction is likely to be uncomfortable. Whether a rider prefers a hard or soft seat is a matter of personal choice and comfort.
