What is IGP Protocol?

What is IGP Protocol? thumbnail
IGP is a kind of network routing protocol

Information is constantly being sent and received through computer networks. Certain standards, or protocols, help ensure the efficient transfer of digital data. One such protocol is IGP, or interior gateway protocol.

  1. Definition

    • IGP is a category of routing protocols used to exchange routing information through an autonomous system. An autonomous system is a single routing domain, or network, controlled by one individual or organization.

    Function

    • Interior gateway protocol uses metrics such as path bandwidth to determine which path to take when directing a packet, or group of digital data, to a destination. Path bandwidth is the speed or rate that digital information is transferred along that path. Interior gateway protocol uses a mathematical and logic-based formula called an algorithm, which utilizes path bandwidth and other metrics to determine the most efficient route to take when forwarding digital information.

    Fun Fact

    • Another major type of routing protocol, called exterior gateway protocol, exchanges routing information between networks, as opposed to within one single network.
