Telesales Definition

Companies that seek to lower overhead and increase sales are almost always involved with telesales in some capacity. This means reaching prospective clients and consumers through telemarketing, or by marketing on the Internet.

  1. Identification

    • Telesales are a form of telemarketing generally executed by use of the telephone, or the Internet. It is a cost-effective way to advertise and sell, and many modern businesses utilize this venue to promote their products. If business owners follow all Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations and make sure employees are properly trained, they will find that utilization of telesales can help their business to meet its financial goals.

    Features

    • While the telephone has always been an indirect tool of sales, telemarketing became widely used in the 1960s, when the late Murray Roman brought structure and accountability to this venue, referring to it as a vital part of sales and marketing in the modern business world. He wrote ''Tele-Marketing Campaigns That Work," as well as "Telephone Marketing: How to Build Your Business by Telephone.''

    Trends

    • As of May 2009, more than 300,000 workers were employed as telemarketing representatives in the United States. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics, many of these jobs are classified by the employers as customer service positions, and they predict a growth of 18 percent for such jobs by 2018.
