Parts of the graviola tree have many uses.

The graviola tree is found in warm tropical regions of North and South America. Its leaves, fruit, seeds, bark and roots are used for a variety of purposes, most notably as an alternative cancer treatment.

  1. The Tree

    • The graviola tree (Annona muricata) is a tree that grows in the tropical regions of the Americas. Its heart-shaped edible fruit has a yellowish-green exterior and slightly-sour tasting white flesh that is sold in some South American markets.

    Identification

    • The graviola tree typically stands 16 to 19 feet tall and has dark glossy green leaves. The tree is known by different names throughout the world, including guanabana, guanabano, guanavana, huanaba, toge-banreisi, durian beggala, cachiman epineux, nangka blanda, soursop and the Brazilian paw paw.

    Uses

    • Different parts of the graviola tree are believed by some to have medical uses: research indicates that it may kill cancer cells, slow tumor growth, lower blood pressure, kill bacteria and viruses, and act as a sedative. Further, it is traditionally believed to relieve depression, reduce fever and stimulate digestion.
