Project Scheduling & Management

Building a good schedule is crucial to launching and managing a project.

Proper scheduling and management is at the core of project management activities. If properly done, the project will be completed on schedule and on budget. If not done properly, project managers will waste critical resources and time.

  1. Project Management

    • Project managers must harness the necessary people and resources and direct efforts from start to completion. This effort requires a detailed project plan, a schedule and the ability to manage activities during both the planning phrase and the operational phrase.

    The Project Plan

    • According to Project Management Body of Knowledge, a project plan is defined as "a formal, approved document used to guide both project execution and project control." Project managers use a project plan to document project scope, project assumptions, project cost projections and operational protocols required to facilitate interaction and communication among stakeholders.

    The Project Schedule

    • Developing an effective project schedule requires a thorough effort. For example, prior to completing the schedule, project managers must have detailed knowledge of each task, the resources required to complete those tasks and how much time it will take to complete each task.

    Project Launch

    • Once the project plan and scheduling is complete and all resources and people are in place or will be in place when needed, the manager launches the project. If well-planned and well-managed, the project should be completed on time and on budget.
