Job Description for a Maritime Planner
A maritime planner works within a city's or state's maritime planning department to ensure that port operations run smoothly. A planner also may work on designing ports of call and engineering projects.

General Duties

The main duty of a maritime planner is to analyze and interpret data needed to prepare reports that summarize social, economic and harbor (or port) use data and trends. Writing market, planning and staff reports is also part of this position. The planner must have strong computer skills and the ability to present oral reports to planning staff and committees. This position requires knowledge of ports, cruise and cargo ships and port design.
Management and Customer Service

A maritime planner may be in change of other planners at the port and will work with clients and project stakeholders by presenting information at meetings and workshops.

Education and Training

This position requires a bachelor's degree in planning, engineering or a related discipline. Most large ports also require planners to have several years of experience in a port or a related marine industry.
