Primitive Camping in the Georgia Wilderness Mountains

Primitive Camping in the Georgia Wilderness Mountains thumbnail
Enjoy primitive camping in northern Georgia.

North Georgia is home to the Cohutta Mountains, part of the Smoky Mountains. This remote area offers a number of primitive camping areas where guests can enjoy the unspoiled beauty of this local wilderness.

  1. Campgrounds

    • In Chattahoochee National Forest, a wilderness area in northeastern Georgia, 17 campgrounds permit primitive camping. Most of these have vault toilets only. A few of the locations may have water spigots available. RVs are generally allowed in these campgrounds, even though there are no electric or water hookups. Picnic tables and charcoal grills are located throughout each campground.

    Activities

    • Campers enjoy activities such as hiking, photography, nature watching, fishing, boating, water sports and picnicking. Some campgrounds in the North Georgia Mountains have playgrounds for children. Wading can be enjoyed in select streams in Chattahoochee National Forest.

    Accessibility

    • Portions of the North Georgia Mountains are inaccessible after heavy rains. This is especially true in the Cohutta Loop, a wilderness area near the Tennessee border. Visitors should check with the local office of the U.S. Forest Service to determine if a particular road has restricted access.

    Reservations

    • A few campsites in the Cohutta Loop do not require reservations. Reservations may be made for many of the campsites in Chattahoochee National Forest by contacting the Forest Service.
