What Degree Do I Need to Become an Architect?

An architect designs buildings and structures.

Architects are professionals who design building and structures. Their work involves designing the look and feel of the structures, and all of its components, while considering functionality, safety and financial budgets.

Degree

Those interested in this profession obtain a bachelor's degree in architecture, which is typically a five-year program. Most states require architects to obtain their education from a program accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board.

Education

Most students who graduate with a degree in architecture work under the supervision of licensed architects to gain valuable work experience. Some may also work in internships before graduating to gain experience.

Licensure

Along with a degree from an accredited educational program, architects must be licensed to obtain the occupational title. This requires practical experience or internships, as well as passing the Architect Registration Examination, which is administered by The National Council of Architectural Registration Boards.
