How to Buy a Blu-ray Player
Blu-ray is the new high-definition format that will eventually replace standard-definition DVD. As of 2010, Blu-ray players have become less expensive, but buying one is still an investment. Make sure you choose the one right based on your specific needs.

Available Connections
-
Before you purchase a Blu-ray player, you should make sure your TV has available connections for it. Most Blu-ray players can be connected via either a single HDMI cable or by component video and audio. Almost all HDTVs sold as of 2010 have both connections, but you will want to be sure before making your purchase.
Internet Features
-
Some Blu-ray players can connect to the Internet to download updated special features for movies. These can include new trailers, live commentary tracks and more. There are even some players that can use the Internet connection to connect to Netflix and other streaming video and audio services. Some Blu-ray players require an Ethernet connection for this, while others can connect via Wi-Fi.

3-D
-
As of August 2010, most homes do not have 3-D televisions, but this may change in the future. If you think you may get an HDTV that has 3-D support, or if you already have one, then you'll need to get a Blu-ray player that also supports 3-D playback.
