How to Buy a Used Fishing Boat
Buying a used fishing boat works well if you are on a budget and still enjoy going fishing. There are several areas you need to consider, however, when buying a used fishing boat. A boat spends most of the time in water, so rot and deterioration are factors to consider.
-
Research
-
Research various types of boats and determine the make and model of fishing boat you want to purchase. When buying a used boat, seek assistance from professionals, such as brokers or salesmen.
History
-
Use the NADA website, located in references, to search the history of the used fishing boat. Click on the boat history report and enter the hull identification number, or HIN, in the box provided. This number is located at the back of the fishing boat on the upper, right corner. Also, the paperwork, such as title or registration, contains the HIN.

Construction
-
Check the hull of the boat, transom, deck and floor to ensure the construction of the boat is good. Make sure the sides of the boat are not rotten by pushing on them with your hand. Also, walk on the floor and determine if it is solid.
Motor
-
Make sure the motor on the used fishing boat runs well and is large enough for the boat. A trolling motor is important when fishing. Having a good trolling motor allows you to enter shallow areas.
Electrical
-
Hook up the battery on the boat and check the electrical components. This includes lights, motors and fish-finders. Make sure the wiring is not frayed or worn.
