According to the Russia Info Center website, today's traditional Russian clothing began to take shape in the 12th and 13th centuries. Traditional Russian dress was first outlawed by Peter the First in 1699 and became even less popular after the revolution of 1917.

  1. Areas

    • Russian clothing has different traditions in various areas of the country. The Rus Clothing website reports residents of the northern areas of Russia wear modest clothing, while clothing in the South of Russia is brighter and more colorful.

    Fabrics

    • The Russia Info Center explains that Russian people of all classes wore the same style clothing, differentiated by the fabrics used to make them. The clothing of peasants was made from hemp, wool and linen. The dress of the aristocracy was created from more expensive materials and decorated with gold and silver buttons.

    Embroidery

    • According to the Rus Clothing website, Russian clothing traditionally uses embroidery, such as crosses, herring bone and animal and human patterns. The colors used for this embroidery are red, blue, green, white and yellow.
