RFID & Livestock Industry

According to Texas Instruments, the use of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is widespread in the livestock industry. The Association for Automatic Identification & Mobility reports that RFID is the transmission of the identity of an object via radio waves.

  1. Legislation

    • The ID Tech Ex website reports that individual governments around the world have introduced legislation requiring the use of RFID technology to track livestock. By 2006, there were more than 70 million RFID tags attached to livestock.

    Monitoring

    • Texas Instruments reports that the use of RFID tags is important for monitoring feed stations and keeping track of the number of animals in a herd. By monitoring feeding stations, livestock owners can monitor the health of animals by tracking the amount of food consumed and the frequency of feeds.

    Disease

    • Texas Instruments explains that RFID technology is used to monitor and track the spread of disease. Using RFID, exporters of meat can also look at the medical history of an animal.
